Walking Around by Pablo Neruda

It so happens I am sick of being a man.

And it happens that I walk into tailorshops and movie houses

dried up, waterproof, like a swan made of felt

steering my way in a water of wombs and ashes.

The smell of barbershops makes me break into hoarse sobs.

The only thing I want is to lie still like stones or wool.

The only thing I want is to see no more stores, no gardens,

no more goods, no spectacles, no elevators.

It so happens that I am sick of my feet and my nails

and my hair and my shadow.

It so happens I am sick of being a man.

Still it would be marvelous

to terrify a law clerk with a cut lily,

or kill a nun with a blow on the ear.

It would be great

to go through the streets with a green knife

letting out yells until I died of the cold.

I don't want to go on being a root in the dark,

insecure, stretched out, shivering with sleep,

going on down, into the moist guts of the earth,

taking in and thinking, eating every day.

I don't want so much misery.

I don't want to go on as a root and a tomb,

alone under the ground, a warehouse with corpses,

half frozen, dying of grief.

That's why Monday, when it sees me coming

with my convict face, blazes up like gasoline,

and it howls on its way like a wounded wheel,

and leaves tracks full of warm blood leading toward the night.

And it pushes me into certain corners, into some moist houses,

into hospitals where the bones fly out the window,

into shoeshops that smell like vinegar,

and certain streets hideous as cracks in the skin.

There are sulphur-colored birds, and hideous intestines

hanging over the doors of houses that I hate,

and there are false teeth forgotten in a coffeepot, there are mirrors

that ought to have wept from shame and terror,

there are umbrellas everywhere, and venoms, and umbilical cords.

I stroll along serenely, with my eyes, my shoes,

my rage, forgetting everything,

I walk by, going through office buildings and orthopedic shops,

and courtyards with washing hanging from the line:

underwear, towels and shirts from which slow dirty tears are falling.

Walking around meaning

Walking Around is a poem written by Pablo Neruda. Neruda wrote the poem when he was counsel of Chile in India. During this time the British controlled the country. The author has written the original poem in Spanish with the English title walking around. The author has given the poem the title walking around so as to draw attention from the readers, and other people. The poem is good and the author has used many poetic devices to make it appealing to the reader. For example the author has used surrealism to convey message clearly to the reader. Surrealism is a 20th century literature movement used to express the working of a subconscious.

It is mainly characterized by fantastic imagery and juxtaposition of the content being discussed. The author has used surrealism in his work to help people understand what he is saying. It is the main style in the poem. The poem meaning is that the writer is tired of the daily activities, and the ignorance of the world of what is going on. This is because the author has experienced a lot, and he has seen illegal activities on the world, and the world ignores them. For example, the author in the poem explains how there are many deaths around the world, and nobody pays attention. These things irritate him, and make him long not to exist any more

The author has written the poem to reflect how people carry out measures to correct crisis. The author reveals that people are no longer serious and they don’t pay close attention to issues like death. He also explains how the world is superficial in the poem. This is shown by the author when he talks about his hair, and nails. He does not refer to his physical appearance. He uses such words to show how the world is superficial as people concentrate on their physical appearance, and they don’t pay close attention to the outside world. The author states that he is tired of ignorance, and he does not want to be ignorant. The poem is true and realistic as it talks about real life (Neruda, Stavans & Bly 2007).

The denotative meaning of the poem

The poems talks about how people on the world have become ignorant as they do not pay close attention to the outside world. This is shown by the author description in the poem when he talks about his hair and nail. He uses imagery to show how people around the world have become ignorant to control disasters. People no longer care about diseases, death and poverty and they have become common in the society. The main theme in the poem is ignorance. The author has used the poem to shows people the consequences of ignorance as they have become ignorant. The author mainly addresses people who are ignorant in the society and the whole world. The author wrote this poem when he was exiled from Chile. The poem reflects the real life, and his suffering. He has used the poem to explain how people are ignorant and how ignorance makes someone suffer (Neruda, Stavans & Bly 2007).

Image in the poem.

The author of the poem walking around has used imagery and figurative speech in his work. The author uses surrealism to show how people are ignorant on things affecting their daily life. For example, people have ignored poverty and death in the society and they have increased. For example, the author states that it would be fun to kill a nun with a blow to the ear and bones fly out of the window. The statements reveal the death the author is witnessing, and how people have ignored it. The author claims that the world is too busy satisfying its vanity, and getting more material things (Neruda, Stavans & Bly 2007). Surrealism imagery is evidenced in the poem when the author states that “It so happens I’m tired of my feet and my nails and my hair and my shadow”. The statement does not mean that the author is not happy with his physical appearance.

The author uses the statement to show clearly the vanity people shared instead of paying attention to crucial issues in the society. The author also states that he is tired of being a man because of selfishness of other people. The author longs for a change on how people handle issue, and ignorance. This is revealed by his words “I don’t want to go on as a root and a tomb”. He further states that he does not want any more misery and ignorance. The poem is an English poem, and it does not have any rhyme. The sentences in the poem do not have any rhyming words. The meter of the poem is not regular. The poem is an imagery poem as the author has used imagery to convey meaning to the reader. The meaning of the poem and form are similar. This is because the author has used imagery to convey meaning and imagery poems use imagery to convey meaning (Neruda, Stavans & Bly 2007).
